Beware of Social Security Card Scam

Posted on May 21, 2007 by Michelle Pastor

A new scam is surfacing in Maine where the caller tries to convince the person on the other end of the phone that his social security card is no longer valid and that a new one needs to be reissued.  It will probably make its way around the US, so be aware of it.

According to the article from Current Publishing,

Bryce Milne received a phone call stating his Social Security card was no longer good and new ones were being issued, however in order to get his new card Milne was asked to give the caller his bank account information.

If you receive a phone call that resembles this scam, call the Social Security Fraud Hotline at 800-269-0271, or go to the web site: www.socialsecurity.gov/oig.
