Compensation for ID Theft Victims in West Virginia

Posted on Mar 16, 2007 by Michelle Pastor

ID theft victims would get access to financial help from the state Crime Victims Compensation Fund under a bill that passed the Legislature.

In a nutshell,

The fund, which is filled with levied fines and federal grants, helps crime victims pay for expenses like funeral costs and personal injury expenses.
Previously, identity theft victims were not eligible claimants to the fund.
Under the bill, identify theft victims would be entitled to $1,000 in travel expenses to attend court proceedings in their cases and money for counseling up to $25,000.
Delegate Brent Boggs, D-Braxton, who sponsored the bill, said the goal is to help victims with travel expenses to encourage more of them to attend court and testify.

The funds won’t help out with actual financial losses from ID theft, but they'll be helpful to those recovering from identity theft.

Other states have their own crime victim compensation fund, but this is the first I’ve heard of victims able to get financial help for counseling and travel related specifically to identity theft.
