Equifax Joining TransUnion in Allowing Credit Freeze Nationwide

Posted on Sep 25, 2007 by Tom Fragala

It appears that Equifax is going to respond to TransUnion’s announcement to allow credit freezes nationwide. Same fee: $10 to freeze/unfreeze. No mention yet if victims will need to pay (I doubt it). And of course, they must comply with any states that already offer a free freeze for victims/non-victims. No word yet from Experian.

From WXIA-TV Atlanta:

Atlanta-based Equifax is joining rival Trans Union in allowing customers to freeze their credit reports, cutting down the chances of ID theft.

Thirty-nine states already mandate the ability to freeze credit reports, but Georgia is not among that list.

Steve Ely, president of Equifax Personal Solutions, told 11Alive Consumer and Business Editor Bill Liss that Equifax is moving quickly, and plans to begin the program in the next few weeks.

"In the next few weeks, we'll announce the details of how we will implement the freeze," Ely said.

But there is a catch -- a $10 fee charged by each credit reporting service for consumers to initially activate the service, and another $10 to turn it off.
