Maryland Credit Freezes Now Available by Law
Posted on Jan 9, 2008 by Tom Fragala
This news that Maryland credit freeze law went into effect January 1 appears to be a bit underwhleming since all three credit reporting companies announced in 2007 they would offer nationwide credit freezes anyway. However, I think MD residents are better off with these laws on the books. Because the credit bureaus charge more for freezes in states without a law ($10 vs $5 in MD), and the statute also requires the bureaus to allow a "thaw" via a PIN and phone call. It remains to be seen how the credit bureaus rollout freezes to the non-statute states. For example, TransUnion offered easy web access to freeze, unfreeze and thaw your credit report, but only if you subscribe to their online TrueCredit service. Without TrueCredit you not only pay for each thaw/freeze, but you can only do so by mail (if I recall correctly).
(FYI, the new MD law provides credit freezes free to victims.)
