Another stolen laptop and retirees take the hit again
Posted on Aug 23, 2007 by Tom Fragala
I rarely post about data breaches anymore, because there are so many. But did you noticed that it seems more often than not, it’s retiree data that is stolen or lost? Here we have yet another laptop stolen, this time with data on 280,000 people. Wouldn’t you be totally paranoid if you had data on 280,000 people on your laptop? So much so that you wouldn’t take it into a restaurant…and leave it lying around?
A laptop loaded with financial information on as many as 280,000 city retirees was stolen from a consultant who took the computer to a restaurant, city officials said.
The private consultant to the city Financial Information Services Agency had access to personal data about members of various city pension systems, mayoral spokesman Jason Post said Wednesday. The consultant told authorities Monday the portable computer had been stolen.
