Arizona House OKs bill to curb identity theft
Posted on Apr 19, 2006 by Tom Fragala
Arizona has probably the worse ID theft problem in the country. And many people I talk to attribute the problem, at least partly, to weak laws and lax enforcement. A January 2006 report by the FTC, entitled “Consumer Fraud and Identity Theft Complaint Data,” stated that “The major metropolitan area with the highest per capita rates of reported identity theft are Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, AZ” The Arizona Daily Star reports on a bill making its way through the state house in Arizona to require notification in the case of a data breach:
Taking a step to curb identity theft, the House on Monday unanimously approved a bill to require companies to notify Arizonans if a security breach of unencrypted computerized data puts sensitive personal information at risk. The Senate previously passed the bill (SB1338) but it now returns to that chamber for consideration of changes made by the House. Passage would sent it to Gov. Janet Napolitano.
