Data breach via laptop theft: breaches in August

Here is a sampling of some recent data breach incidents caused by laptop theft or loss. The dates shown are the announcement date of the breaches usually. These are just the incidents that we know of thus far in August 2006.

  • August 26: Sovereign Bank has 3 laptops stolen, customer data lost.
  • August 25: U.S. Dept. of Transportation, A laptop stolen that might have sensitive data on 200 people.
  • August 25: Dominion Resources, two laptops stolen with employee data.
  • August 22: Beaumont Hospital, laptop stolen from car with data on 28,000 patients.
  • August 22: AFLAC, laptop stolen with data on 600 policy holders.
  • August 17, Williams-Sonoma, laptop stolen from home of Deloitte employee, with data on 1200 employees.
  • August 16, Chevron had a laptop stolen with unknown amount of compromised employee data.
  • August 15: U.S. Dept. of Transportation, laptop stolen from hotel conference room.
  • August 9: U.S. Dept. of Transportation, laptop stolen from government vehicle, with data on 130,000 people.
  • August 4: PSA HealthCare, laptop stolen from a contractor, data on 51000 patients on it.
  • August 4: Toyota, laptop stolen from employee’s car in their parking lot.

I've seen a lot of laptops stolen and the picture says a thousand words - people normally left them sitting in plain view in a car.

Much better to always keep them in your trunk, or better yet with you.
