Data on 200,000 Wellpoint Customers Stolen

Posted on Feb 14, 2007 by Tom Fragala

Courier-Journal reports:

Computer tapes containing personal information on about 196,000 members of health insurer WellPoint — including many Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield customers in Kentucky and Indiana — have been stolen from the office of a WellPoint vendor.

The back-up tapes were stolen from the Massachusetts office of Concentra Preferred Systems, a company that audits and analyzes claims data for WellPoint. Social Security numbers, often the key to committing identity theft, were among the information on the tapes.

It's de ja vu every time this happens. Businesses really need to look into adding access rights protections like encryption to files not only on servers, but on laptops, portable hard drives & backup tapes/discs
