Hospital loses laptop; 257,000 patients at risk

Posted on Aug 3, 2006 by Tom Fragala

A disaster planning exercise went awry and a laptop was stolen. Now a quarter million people are at risk of identity theft. GuardMyCreditFile reports this story.

A disaster planning exercise turned into a real disaster for one New York Hospital. Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie, NY has reported that a laptop computer which was stolen from their facility contained a copy of the hospitals master patient database.

The hospital has not said exactly how many names were contained in the database. But they have said that 257,800 of those whose names were in the database are at risk of becoming identity theft victims. That’s because the database contained other personally identifiable information on them, like SSNs, addresses and medical records.
