How to make an ATM machine do your bidding

Posted on Sep 21, 2006 by Tom Fragala

A Wired blog called 27B Stroke 6 points to this. A security expert got his hands on the user’s manual for an ATM machine and was able to punch in some codes, turn on “operator” mode, entered some default passwords and changed settings. With this done, he could tell the machine to dispense $20 instead of $5 bills. If the company that installed the ATM machines was too stupid to change the default passwords, anyone could do this "hack." And the manuals are easily available for download on the internet.

I've seen the same thing happen with safes - when the factory (master/programming) codes are left in (not changed).

It isn't very hard to get factory codes either.
