Posted on Jul 19, 2006 by Tom Fragala

Nelnet, a student loan company, announced that it has lost a backup tape with data on 188,000 customers. GuardMyCreditFile has this one.

Nelnet, based in Lincoln, NE, is one of the country’s largest student loan companies. The company currently services combined loans valued at more that $21 Billion. The company announced the loss of the computer tape yesterday. The tape contains the personal data, including loan information, on 188,000 customers. All of these customers had previously been serviced by the College Access Network (CAN) between November 1, 2002 and May 31, 2006. The tape was being shipped to a Nelnet location via UPS.

This type of information leak infuriates people time and time again. As an individual, I am entrusting another company with my information. Heavy fines are a minimum. What about financial re-imbursement to the people who have their private information exposed and thus have to cancel credit cards, file reports with the credit agencies, etc.
