Debit Card Scam Uncovered on Campus

Posted on May 8, 2007 by Michelle Pastor

Three Penn State Berks students were arrested for their part in a debit card scam.  They had convinced other students to hand over their ATM cards, and wait a few days before claiming their card was stolen.  Meanwhile the students in charge of the scam would take cash out of the accounts immediately.

Once the “victims” claimed their card was stolen, the bank would put the missing funds back into the account and, on top of it, the “victims” received one-half of the stolen money from the “thieves”.

Luckily, the police noticed an unusually high number of ATM cards reported stolen and when they investigated, they uncovered the scam.
