American Express Card Fraud Liability

It’s pretty well known that Mastercard and Visa provide voluntary zero-liability for fraud victims. I’m often asked about American Express. Here’s the scoop with an American Express card, from the American Express website:

Use the American Express® Card online or off, and you won't be held responsible for any fraudulent charges. Period.

And if someone uses your Card without your consent, you'll never pay any part of the fraudulent charges-not even the first $50.

If any fraudulent charge appears on your statement, simply notify us at the 800 number on the back of your Card, or access your account at americanexpress.com/myca and notify us by e-mail. In most cases, a temporary credit is given immediately.

20070315 - ALERT!
I am posting this as a result of a fraudulent charge to my American Express Card. Their were two charges made within minutes of each other, in a state many hundreds of miles from where I live, in a store that requires membership of which I am not a member and (get this) the two charges had receipts with hand written credit card numbers. Oh, did I mention the two numbers didn’t match!
So, I called American Express (AE) to report this as a fraudulent charge. I got a (what I thought to be) a fraudulent report reference number.
Some time later I get a snail mail stating the reported disputed charge was deemed to be valid! I called AE & was told the reference number I had was for disputes. I was given a different reference number of which I was told was a fraudulent report reference number and that I would be called from the fraud department. I was also told the AE fraud department was available between 08:00 & 20:00 (8AM to 8PM). I guess AE doesn’t care about fraudulent activity.
After about an hour or so I called them back, finally got to talk to someone in the AE fraudulent department. I was told I would not be responsible for the charges.
We’ll see.

Regardin American Express
I went on a trip to Europe, and on the very last day of my trip, in Barcelona, Spain just 2 hrs. before boarding the high speed train from Barcelona to Madrid, we took the underground train, and at the moment of get into the same, I got pickpocket of my wallet, where I had an Mastercad and American Express Cards. plus my ID like drivers License ( I am a professional driver ), Social Insurance Number, and worst my wife IM 1000 card, wat is her id to return to Canada, she is a landed Imigrant, myself a canadian citicen.
This happens at 16.50 and I went to the nearest police station to do the report, I have the copy of the same, I try to call Amex but with the problem of hours ( 7 of diference with Canada ) it was imposible, plus we where on the train where I couldn,t get any comunication with Canada.
We arribe at 1 AM at Barajas where we couldn,t find an hotel where to stay.
We got out of Spain at 10 AM on the Sept. 27 arriving in London 2 hrs later, by the time we went to the Air Canada counter for aour boarding passes, the attendat dindn,t let us go, because of the Im card of my wife.
So we stay in London that night,
we went to the Canadian Embassy in the morning of the Sept 28 and we got a new visa stamped on my wife Passport, so we took the plane back to Calgary at 13.30 at Heatrow.
My probles is that between the Sept. 26 after we took the train
back to Madrid, thye person who pickpocketed me took some cash I don,t know how without the PIN
ans AMEX is charging me with the
withdraw.
You must understand that by the time the fraud happens, I wasn,t
in Barcelona.
I have all the receipts necesarie
for any serious investigation.
I will keep paying to AMEX just because I don,t want my credit tarnished.
Please if sombody had something
like this tell me with is the action to start.
