Free California Senior Summit Announced

The California Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA) is preparing to host a first-of-its-kind senior summit to address financial, physical and emotional abuse of the elderly.

Senior Summit 2006: Protecting and Serving California's Aging Population will be held Friday May 12, 2006, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Sacramento Convention Center.  "This summit is for anyone who has an interest in protecting California's seniors," said DCA Director Charlene Zettel. "It is a unique opportunity for government, community-based organizations and others to not only come together and discuss the many issues affecting seniors, but to find ways to work together to address them."

The summit will feature two panel presentations in the morning, one highlighting the state approach to protecting seniors, the other examining local approaches. Panel discussions will be followed by three breakout sessions in the afternoon, covering a wide variety of topics, including privacy protection and identity theft prevention for seniors, health insurance (including Medicare Part D), elder financial abuse, conservatorships, real estate scams, law enforcement efforts, consumer protection, and many other issues.

I wish I could attend. Recently, I was a volunteer with the Santa Barbara DA’s elder and dependent adult abuse unit. The amount of fraud perpetrated on the elderly and dependent adults is staggering with utterly tragic results. The stories I heard were gut wrenching and infuriating. One of the biggest challenges is coordinating efforts among government, law enforcement, non-profits and private enterprises. And it takes caring people willing to make an effort to help and work together. I hope the summit is a big success. I wish they had them in more locations across the state. But I’m not complaining: kudos to Charlene Zettel and the DCA for doing this.
