It's Not Easy to Catch a Thief

Posted on Jul 20, 2007 by Michelle Pastor

Identity thieves are not often caught and prosecuted.  This article from Concord Monitor Online explains the frustrating issues involved by recounting one woman’s attempt to get justice after she became an identity thief victim.

"If somebody had a credit card stolen at a local gas station, we would respond to that, but if the card is now being used in Florida, we don't have jurisdiction down there," Duval said.

Identity theft cases can be challenging for prosecutors because the people committing the crimes are often moving from state to state or making the fraudulent charges over the internet. Tracking them down and bringing them to New Hampshire to face the charges can be difficult, he said.
