Happy Birthday Elvis Presley (And a Surprise)

Posted on Jan 8, 2007 by Tom Fragala

ELVIS PRESLEY, Born 08 Jan 1935, Died Aug 1977, SSN 409-52-2002.

That isn't a typo. That's Elvis' real social security number and a clue as to how serious our privacy and identity theft problems still are in 2007.

And, no, I didn't break the law in obtaining and posting his SSN. In fact, there is a federal law that REQUIRES the social security administration to provide this data on the deceased to anyone that wants it. And, yes, I think it is bloody insane.

If you think that's bad, my local paper, the Seattle Times reported criminals scoping out graveyards to get first & last names along with DOBs. Seattle Times reporter, Christine Clarridge covered it - http://archives.seattletimes.nwsource.com/cgi-bin/texis.cgi/web/vortex/display?slug=idtheft06m&date=20060506&query=id+theft+cemetery
