Advice to bloggers to protect themselves from fraud

Posted on Feb 13, 2006 by Tom Fragala

If you write a blog, you may be a target of identity theft someday. I am going to write a more detailed post about this in the future. However, for now, please think twice before you post personal information on your blog—it might be used to commit fraud. For example, I know some bloggers who have their home address posted in a resume on their blog. That’s a bad idea and just not necessary these days—email alone will do just fine. I also know others who post there whereabouts before they leave on trips, list their cell phone number and details like their birthday, wife’s name, etc. I’m not saying you shouldn’t do that—I applaud your openness—just be careful how much you put out there. And if you think I’m just being an alarmist or self-serving, send me an email and I’ll tell you a horror story or ten (tfragala/AT/gmail/dot/com).

On another note, I thought I’d post a link here in reference to a blog by Robert Scoble called “The brrreeeport report.”

it is suprising how many people tell the world their brithdays and fullnames and phone numbers too. I can't belive it, especially as that is all used in ID Fraud
