Identity theft help for Canada
Posted on Mar 5, 2008 by Tom Fragala
We've heard from a few Canadian citizens over the last year that needed help with identity theft. We don't have a Canadian myTruston version, yet, although I wish we did. The laws are different of course, although many of the same tips and concepts apply to Canada. For example, there are credit bureaus in Canada, of course, and you can get access to your credit reports to look for fraud.
See these web pages for good information on protecting yourself and recovering from ID theft for citizens of Canada:

Tom, what is the problem with introducing a Canadian version?

Reply from Tom:
Developing a Canadian version requires a significant amount of resources to research the laws and best practices in Canada and then design and write the appropriate tasks, letters, procedures and other content our site offers.
We'd certainly like to offer our services to the Canadian market, however, we haven't yet felt we could dedicate the resources needed to do so. With the appropriate researcher/writer and business partners interested in offering it to their members/customers, we'd consider it.

Michael would know better than I, but with the exception of different credit bureaus, the criminal behavior is pretty much the same.
One difference I've noted is that law enforcement seems to treat people a little better. They are less likely to "blow off" a property crime. Of course, this can vary from area to area.
At least that has been my experience when crossing the border on an investigation, or when I have assisted Canadian peers on issues.
