Identity Theft on Long Island, NY

The Long Island Press reports that the people had their sensitive person data posted on a government web site. When a corporation leaks sensitive data, the result can be action by the Federal Trade Commission or state authorities. What happens when a government agency is the source of a data breach?
It was recently discovered that residents’ personal information, such as social security numbers, were inadvertently viewable on the County Clerk's web site, according to a statement from the Suffolk County Legislature.

On Feb. 16, Suffolk County Majority Leader Jon Cooper (D-Huntington), Legislator Ed Romaine (R-Center Moriches), Acting Suffolk County Clerk Judith Pescale and Nassau County Clerk Maureen O'Connell held a press conference to propose new measures to combat identity theft.
