Mail carrier arrested on suspicion of identity theft
Posted on Apr 19, 2006 by Tom Fragala
The Santa Cruz Sentinel has a story of a substitute mail carrier that is a suspect in stealing mail. The post service is one of my biggest concerns and people don’t seem to talk a lot about it. The mail is gigantic source of material for stealing identities. I hope the USPS and US Postal Inspectors have plans in place to deal with this. Frankly, I’m not sure what they can do about it. They have such a huge workforce and it’s supplemented by contracts and part-time workers. Do they do background checks on employees before and after they are hired?
Sheriff's deputies arrested a substitute rural postal carrier Tuesday who is suspected of stealing the identities of as many as a dozen people she delivered mail to in the Bonny Doon area. After a 10-day investigation by the Sheriff's Office, the Capitola Police Department and the U.S. Postal Service, Jeri Leann Silva, 34, of Santa Cruz, was jailed on multiple counts of identity theft, grand theft and forgery, said sheriff's Sgt. Dan Campos. All are felony charges.
