South Dakota Identity theft measure signed
Posted on Mar 9, 2006 by Tom Fragala
PIERRE, S.D. - A state law to help protect victims of identity theft in South Dakota will be enacted July 1.
Gov. Mike Rounds has signed the legislation, which will let identity theft victims block access to their credits reports for up to seven years by notifying consumer reporting agencies in writing. That will prevent the information from being released without the victim's permission.
Sen. Jason Gant, R-Sioux Falls, the bill's prime sponsor, told his colleagues identity theft is one of the nation's fastest-growing crimes. People spend an average of 600 hours and $1,400 trying to restore their credit, he said.
