Victims describe the nightmare of identity theft

Posted on May 1, 2006 by Tom Fragala

Dayton Daily News has an article in which several ID theft victims are interviewed. Here’s a summary of one victim’s situation

While visiting an old girlfriend in California in 2003, J. Edgar Bennett of Dayton had his passport, driver's license and American Express checks stolen from his friend's home. When he began looking for a job in Nashville…one by one, all six of his prospective employers called back to cancel their interviews. Bennett asked the last one why. "He screamed, 'Because you're wanted in Idaho!'  The man who pilfered Bennett's identity had been charged in Idaho with grand theft auto and felony drug possession. He also happened to be an acquaintance of his old girlfriend.

And I was blown away by this [my emphasis added]…

Seven years after a bank employee stole her financial identity to charge $35,000 on credit cards and buy a new car, [Patty] Smith is still fighting to clear her name and maintain her credit rating.  "The last seven years have been extremely stressful, and I don't know if it's ever going to go away completely," she said. "I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy, not even my perpetrator," who was prosecuted, convicted and jailed for her crime.
