Disputing Your Credit Report...
Posted on Mar 28, 2007 by Michelle Pastor
As a financial counselor, I'm often asked the question, "When I find a mistake on my credit report, should I call the creditor directly or dispute it throught the credit bureau?". The answer is - it depends.
If an account shows up as incorrectly as delinquent or the balance shown is incorrect, call the creditor first. Most times you can get it cleared up right away by talking directly with the creditor. You may want to dispute it also with the credit bureau just so there is documentation.
When the issue is more complicated, ie, a collection agency is involved and you disagree with the balance or you're questioning the account altogether, dispute it through the credit bureaus. This not only creates a paper trail, but it starts the 30 - 45 day clock ticking. If the credit bureau can't verify the information by then it will be removed from the credit file.
