You Can Never Hear This Too Often...Don't Accept Collect Calls From a Jail!

Posted on Apr 28, 2007 by Michelle Pastor

Inmates in one jail have come up with a plan to "gain control of the phone line to make long-distance and collect calls on the victim's dime", and I'm thinking it may be just a matter of time before inmates around the country figure this one out.

Inmates call random numbers collect and identify themselves as police officers from the jail. They say that there has been an accident with a family member and to get more information, the person must call a certain phone number.

If the victim calls the number as instructed, they will transfer their telephone number to a call-forwarding service, which enables the inmate to charge the victim’s phone account with future collect calls.

Apparently the inmates are allowed to make phone calls because they have not yet been convicted of a crime.
