Job Applicants Beware of Identity Theft Risk
Posted on Mar 17, 2007 by Michelle Pastor
In Colorado a couple of years ago, a man and woman posted a want ad in local newspapers for an assistant position. Applicants were interviewed and then asked to fill out an application, complete with social security number.
It turns out that there was no job. The couple had just come up with a very creative way to get all the information they needed to steal the applicants’ identities and they were very successful.
Now that you know it can happen, be careful when filling out applications and never give your social security number until it’s absolutely necessary (and you feel comfortable giving it).
