Mass. Considers Law Making Retailers Liable for Data Theft

In response to the massive data breach at TJX, parent company of TJ Maxx, lawmakers in Massachusetts are mulling over a new law. It would force retailers to take responsibility for security breaches. WSJ has the story.>

If it passes, and that's a big if, it would cause a seismic event through the retail and banking industries. Consumer activists would cheer and those opposed would say that consumers will end up picking up the tab. Sure to be a lot of debate. Lobbyists and lawyers are certain to do well no matter what the outcome.
