Mississippi Driver's License is I.D. Theft Risk

Posted on Feb 6, 2006 by Tom Fragala

I was shocked to read that 17 states and DC still use social security numbers on driver’s licenses. I didn’t realize the number was still so high. Keeping SSN’s on driver’s licenses is such a blatant disregard for consumer privacy and a huge ID theft risk. Think about how many times you had someone your license. All they need to do is remember your name and SSN and they can steal your identity. How easy is it for someone to open your wallet or purse and simply glance at your license? That’s all it takes for someone to destroy your financial (and emotional) well-being.

Despite a change in federal law, Mississippi is one of 17 states and the District of Columbia still listing social security numbers on driver's licenses.

That makes it easier for thieves to steal your identity if you lose your wallet. There's an easy solution to protect you from becoming a victim of identity theft.

The next time you renew your license or apply for an identification card you will be given the option of not listing your social security number on your license. It is a move to protect you from identity thieves.
