Be Wary of Charities Calling for Donations

A charity scam that bilked people out of $10 million was shut down in Wisconsin.
An Appleton man is among eight people arrested Tuesday in connection with a charity solicitation scam that allegedly brought in more than $10 million during the past four years. The criminal complaint alleges the defendants, operating through various businesses, used deceptive telephone solicitations to collect over $10 million in contributions from out-of-state donors, on behalf of claimed charitable entities.
Here’s some of the charities the fraudsters claim they represented…
They included the American Deputy Sheriffs Association (ADSA), the Coalition of Police and Sheriffs (COPS), the American Veterans Relief Foundation, the Association of Disabled Firefighters, the Disabled Firefighters Fund, the Veterans Assistance Council, and the Coalition of Disabled Firefighters.
