Senator Allard Is On The Right Track

Posted on May 25, 2007 by Michelle Pastor

Senator Wayne Allard (R-Colo.) announced that the provision he introduced to fight identity theft has been included in The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007.   Currently, the Social Security Administration (SSA) and the Department of Homeland Security are prevented from sharing information even if it means stopping cases of identity theft.  But with Allard’s amendment the two agencies will be able to work together when there is suspicion of identity theft.  For example, in cases where multiple names are associated with one social security number – a pretty good indicator of identity theft by illegal immigrants - the SSA can notify the Department of Homeland Security which would investigate.

According to an article in The Cherry Creek News in Colorado,

"Under current law, government agencies are prevented from sharing information with each other, even in cases where communication could lead to the discovery of identity theft," said Allard. "This wall between agencies concerns me a great deal and I am pleased that my amendment to provide a legislative fix to this problem has been included in the immigration bill we are debating."
