Opting Out from Companies You Do Business With

Posted on Mar 2, 2008 by Tom Fragala

Ice-covered-mailboxWe've written a lot here about privacy and opting-out. One thing you may wonder about is: How do you opt-out from companies you do business with--to prevent them from soliciting you over and over?

Well, you can opt-out, although it may not be via privacy laws, just (hopefully) good business practices of the company. They probably don't want to waste money on customers than don't want to hear from them any more (although sometimes I wonder).

So what can you do? Unfortunately, it requires some effort on your part. Contact the company in writing with your name, mailing address or email and ask them to remove you from ALL marketing lists. That may be harder than it sounds if they don't have centralized customer databases, which is usually the case.

And if you order from them again, you might find you end up on another mailing list (because of your order). Then you got to opt-out again. Something you might see a check box to opt-out when you place your order online. And financial institutions must contact you annually to opt-out from offers.
