Utility Worker Charged With ID Theft

Posted on Mar 25, 2007 by Michelle Pastor

Here's a chilling reminder that you can never be too careful - but sometimes you don't have a choice.

This utility worker had access to all kinds of information for each customer and she chose to help herself to at least one person's identity. The utility customers didn't have a choice of whether or not to provide their information - it's the only way to receive service. Read Utility Worker Charged With Identity Theft for the whole story.

This is a great example of why it's unnerving for me to give my social security number to the receptionist or anyone else at a doctor's office. I know they need the information to process the health insurance claim, but that person can easily hijack the social security number or sell it to someone else who will.
